A total of 18 foreign experts, including Microsoft founder Bill Gates, have been inducted into China’s foremost engineering academic institution.
The announcement was published on the official website of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) on Monday, along with a list of 67 domestic senior engineers, professors and specialists who have also been selected as CAE members.
CAE refers to Gates as a representative from TerraPower, a nuclear reactor design company headquartered in Washington which currently focuses on the development of travelling wave reactor (TWR) technology. According to open information, Bill Gates is the chairman of the board and one of the energy firm’s primary investors.
TerraPower signed an agreement with the China National Nuclear Corporation in September 2015 to build a nuclear reactor in Xiapu, a county in Fujian Province, between 2018 and 2025.
The other foreign members to be inducted are mostly scholars and specialists from internationally prestigious institutions, including the British Royal Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Sciences of Russia, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
